Back-to-School Self Defense You Learned in Kindergarten

The internet is full of advice with back-to-school self-defense tips. But I’m sticking with “All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten.” I’m taking a page out of Robert Fulghum classic book. But I’ve added a twist. Be sure to enjoy the podcast featuring a radio interview I did for The Coffee Hour at KFUO Radio. I share my four tips for back-to-school self defense, all of which, you learned in kindergarten. Be sure to find a link to the free videos at the bottom of this blog then find an online self-defense curriculum for the girls in your life.

My four tips for a safe back-to-school

Be Confident.

Yes, I know you might be scared. Maybe nervous. But I also know you are excited. Excited to make new friends and learn new things. If you don’t think you are ready … You are. You were born for this. You will do great things! Walk into school with your head held high. Imagine a crown on your head. (There really is an imaginary crown on your head.) Smile at people. When you smile, people will smile back. You will make other people feel confident. Look you just made a new friend!

Be Cautious.

Be cautious in traffic. Of course, look both ways before you cross the street, but I’m talking about creepy internet traffic. Sweet Mr. Fulghum’s advice still applies (but he had no idea how far this was going to go).

First, let me speak to parents of kindergarteners (because I’m sure your kindergartner is not posting on Snapchat and if they are, for the love of all things sane, stop!) Parents, teach healthy internet habits. Kindergartner should not be on Snapchat nor should they be on the internet for that matter. As children get older continue to monitor screen time. Teach your children about the dangers of the internet at the appropriate age. Monitor all internet activity. Yes, you have the right to do this. It’s your phone and it’s your child. You are the parent. No excuses. And when your child finally goes to college, they will understand the dangers of the internet and make wise choices.  Girls, did you know Snapchat is now on the creepy stalker app list? Stop sharing your location. And do not talk to strangers! Ever.

Only share your location with a trusted friend and parents. And do it the old fashioned way .. with a note, a phone call, email or text.

Which leads me to #3 (To learn more about the 15 Creepy Apps click here for this news story) Seriously, heed this advice.

Be a Buddy.

back to school

Everyone needs a travel buddy. From your first field trip to your first big trip over seas always travel with a buddy or a group of buddies. And if you are out late (studying at the library, of course) You can always call for someone to come get you. You can always call campus patrol to walk with you. Be confident to pick up the phone and call for help. Make sure you know the safety policies of your school.

Be a Good Friend.

Seek out trusted, loyal friends. Get to know people before you reveal too much information. Meet friends in public areas. Do not bring friends into your dorm room. Always play in public spaces with supervision. Do not go home with someone you don’t know well or get into someone’s car you don’t know well.

If a situation becomes a bit more scary. Remember the triple A’s

Assert Yourself.

Your voice is your first line of self defense. Use it. Use your voice to communicate your boundaries. Use your voice to get help. Use your voice to de-escalate a person and the situation. Use strong body language to communicate confidence and boundaries. Remember, you have a crown on your head. Stand up tall and speak loud and clear.

Assess Your Situation.

Get your head out of your phone and look around. Your eyes should always be scanning your surroundings. How many people are around you? Where are your exits? Can you get help? Can you go some where else? Begin to determine your next steps by evaluating your surroundings.

Act Appropriately.

Based on your ability to assert yourself and assess of your surroundings, you will be able to act appropriately. Every situation is different. Most of the time you can seek a peaceful resolution. Some times you will need some self-defense skills.

I just had to! Here’s a list of lessons from Robert Fulghum’s book “All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten”

  1. Share everything.
    2. Play fair.
    3. Don’t hit people.
    4. Put things back where you found them.
    5. CLEAN UP YOUR OWN MESS.
    6. Don’t take things that aren’t yours.
    7. Say you’re SORRY when you HURT somebody.
    8. Wash your hands before you eat.
    9. Flush.
    10. Warm cookies and cold milk are good for you.
    11. Live a balanced life – learn some and drink some and draw some and paint some and sing and dance and play and work everyday some.
    12. Take a nap every afternoon.
    13. When you go out into the world, watch out for traffic, hold hands, and stick together.
    14. Be aware of wonder. Remember the little seed in the Styrofoam cup: The roots go down and the plant goes up and nobody really knows how or why, but we are all like that.
    15. Goldfish and hamster and white mice and even the little seed in the Styrofoam cup – they all die. So do we.
    16. And then remember the Dick-and-Jane books and the first word you learned – the biggest word of all – LOOK.”

If you are not familiar with Brazilian jiu-jitsu, that’s okay. It was a new concept to me too. But after a lot of research, my husband and I discovered jiu-jitsu and learned it was the best martial art for our daughters because it addresses the ground game situation like no other martial art. Don’t get me wrong, karate and taekwondo are fun, but are not real to life when it comes to self-defense. And Krav Maga looks good in theory, but you better be bigger and stronger and probably faster if you want to be successful at it.

Brazilian jiu-jitsu equips a smaller person to overcome a larger person by learning techniques. I’d like to introduce you to this martial art within the safety of your home and or group of friends.

faith vs martial arts

Can Faith and Martial Arts Co-exist?

Faith and martial arts have co-existed for centuries. Many martial arts carry eastern mysticism origins with it. Symbols on the walls of a dojo or meditations used in the teaching may reflect these origins. Each dojo should be examined and prayerfully considered based on your comfort level. But apart from spirituality, learning a martial art has many benefits such as meeting fitness goals, learning self-defense skills and character development.

I’m thrilled to share a Christian worldview here at The Great Flip. From the beginning of The Great Flip journey, I’ve had three goals:

First, to give girls an online venue to try simple self-defense inspired by Brazilian jiu-jitsu in her own comfort zone with trusted family and friends.

Second, I want to emphasize nutrition as a form of self-defense against illness and obesity. I share recipes, resources and stories to equip and inspire girls to lead healthy, well-balanced lifestyles.

And finally, third, I want to give girls a Grace Place. A Grace Place is a safe space to learn about Jesus and discover his unconditional love for her. The Great Flip is for all people from all backgrounds and beliefs. I welcome everyone to ponder and mediate on the Christian worldview presented at The Great Flip.

Want to go deeper into Martial Arts and Spirituality. Listen to my friend at the Intersection of Jesus and Jiu-jitsu

Words of Wisdom

The martial art’s experience usually includes a moment of wisdom delivered by the wise instructor.  The sense, professor, or coach imparts wisdom to the student. They might talk about respect, authority and teamwork to name a few.

Here at The Great Flip, I have developed a series of “Words of Wisdom” talking points. Consider this my way of adding a spiritual element to the martial arts community. Each Word of Wisdom is downloadable, just look for the PDF file in the blog.  Each Word of Wisdom has a Bible verse, a short message and follow-up questions or comments for you to discuss with the girls in your life.

Feel free to open or close a “self-defense training” event with these talking points. Encourage the girls to memorize the Bible verses and reflect upon the teaching. Check back from time to time. I’ll continue to add The Great Flip Words of Wisdom!

Here’s a Sample from “Words of Wisdom #3”

Girl Power vs. God Power

“I can do all things through Him who strengthens me” Philippians 4:13

I believe jiu-jitsu is the best martial art for self-defense because it equips a smaller person to defend against a larger opponent. A girl learns to trust techniques, not her own strength.

Today’s culture attempts to convince girls to reach within herself to find strength. “Girl Power” sounds empowering, but in reality, it’s exhausting. Pressure to perform and expectations to succeed crush a girl’s spirit.  Girls suffer from depression and anxiety now more than any time in history. Girl power falls short. Thank goodness for God’s power! A girl can do anything NOT because of who she is. A girl can do anything because of WHOSE she is! Let His power strengthen you!

How would you describe the difference between Girl Power vs. God Power?

Ask God to fill you with His Power and memorize Philippians 4:13.

Subscribers to The Great Flip gain access to all the Words of Wisdom talking points.

Faith-based Self-Defense for Girls

PODCAST TIME!!! Clearly, I’m working on my interview skills, so bear with me as you listen to a radio interview between myself and a delightful host at a Christian radio station in California. We talked about faith-based self-defense for girls.

I’ve posted the entire interview on my Podcast. Besides sharing online self-defense and life skills for girls at The Great Flip, I was given the opportunity to go deeper about my desire to develop faith-based motivation resources to compliment the online self-defense program. Feel free to share!

Faith-based Self-defense

grace place

In the interview, I tried to communicate a few reasons for making GRACE a central theme at The Great Flip. Understanding GRACE is foundational to the Christian faith. And I want girls to be fully grounded in her knowledge of GRACE. Once GRACE has a firm foundation in a girl’s heart, she will know her freedom in Christ is marked not by her works, but instead by Jesus’s life, death and resurrection, and most important by His finished work.

Keep your ears open for an important distinction I make about Christianity. Listen for words about “law,” which are activities and works girls feel obligated to do to earn something. Then listen carefully for GRACE, which is freely given to us from God, no strings attached.

GRACE-based Faith

Grace for you

As Christians we are saved by GRACE through faith as Ephesians 2:8-9 states “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.”

Simply put, Jesus + nothing = everything. On the contrary Jesus + something = nothing.  And by the way, as a subscriber to The Great Flip, you have access to a series of messages that dig deep into this equation: Jesus + nothing = everything! Click here for 2 Ways to Join and Subscribe now.

A Parable about GRACE

girl reading Bible

Here’s something amazing about GRACE illustrated in one of Jesus’ parables in the Gospel of Mark 2.

“No one sews a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment. If he does, the patch tears away from it, the new from the old and a worse tear is made. And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the wine will burst the skins – and wine is destroyed, and so are the skins. But new wine is for fresh wineskins.” Mark 2:21-22

Jesus tells an unusual parable comparing old clothes and new patches and old and new wineskins. He says the two cannot mix. Jesus was trying to enlighten the Pharisees who continued to question his “new” way of doing things. They were trying to add GRACE into their equation and traditions.

A more contemporary expression might be “Out with the old and in with the new.”

Any religion that requires you to do something to earn something is driven by law. It’s exhausting. Unfortunately, even some Christians get caught in works-based religion.

However, Jesus came to offer GRACE. His death, resurrection and ascension frees us from the law. He is not adding more to the law. He has replaced the law with GRACE. The only good that comes from the law, is its ability to point you immediately to GRACE!

Read these Bible verses to understand GRACE.

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away, behold, the new has come.” 2 Corinthians 5:17

“And I will give them one heart, and a new spirit I will put within them. I will remove the heart of stone from their flesh and give them a heart of flesh…” Ezekiel 11:19

Now, back to the parable about garments and wineskins. We can’t patch our garments. Jesus wants to give us a brand-new jacket. His robe of righteousness.

Listen up girls, don’t just add GRACE to your Christian life. Give him your burdens, your anxiety and all the “to-do” lists. He gives amazing GRACE and it’s free. Get rid of the old and receive the new.  If you try and add GRACE to your “to-do” list, you will burst with stress and anxiety. Receive it freely. Rest in his GRACE.

This is The Great Flip, “For our sake, He made Him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God.” 2 Corinthians 5:21

Why have I continued to capitalize the word GRACE? Here’s an acronym to help you remember the depths of God’s GRACE.

God’s

Christ’s

Expense

the power of prayer

The Power of Prayer

Yes, I believe in the power of prayer. I direct my prayers to the one true God. The God of the Bible who is revealed as Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The entire Bible, Old and New Testament, reveal Jesus as the Son of God. The perfect prophet, priest and king. The King of kings and Lord of lords. He answers prayers. Always.

It is important to clarify, because, seriously, there’s some bizarre stuff out there. I personally know well-intended people who seek things like channels and spirits in hope of answered prayer. There is one God who answers prayers for your good. Again, seek the Bible and you’ll discover the true God who loves you and reveals himself to you through Jesus.

(If you don’t believe me, that’s okay. Don’t take my word for it. Read the Bible. Find a Bible-believing church and seek out truth. My daughter is reading a book right now called “I Don’t Have Enough Faith to Be an Atheist” by Frank Turek and Norman Geisler. I’m listening to it on Audible. Highly recommend it.)

Back to School and Prayer

With this in mind, I want to share the power of prayer with you. Especially, if you are sending your precious children back to school. And even if you home-school, you may send your children away to extracurricular activities.

And most important, someday we will release our children into adulthood. The wonderful privilege of prayer is that through all the seasons of life, we have a precious gift of prayer that remains steadfast. And HE is faithful.

I have one daughter in high school and one in college, so I’m in a new season of life learning to “let go and let God” in a whole new way. Prayer has always been important to me, but wow, prayer has taken on a whole new level of meaning.

Moms in Prayer

I was a praying mom when my girls were little. I found an amazing ministry that taught me how to pray. It’s called Moms in Prayer.

Their mission is simple: Moms in Prayer International impacts children and schools worldwide for Christ by gathering mothers to pray. Check it out. There might be a group of moms praying at your child’s school right now!

Girls in Prayer … is NEW!

And I’m extremely excited about their new ministry called “Girls in Prayer.” Now girls are being equipped to pray with amazing resources from Moms in Prayer.

the power of prayer

This program was originally developed in partnership with American Heritage Girls (AHG), a Christian character development program whose mission is to build women of integrity through service to God, family, community and country.

The resources answer the questions, “Why should we pray?” and “How do I pray?” at age appropriate levels. The activities and study guides point to Scripture as the handbook to prayer and are meant to be engaging and to spark conversation between adults and kids.

Moms in Prayer welcome you to tailor the activities to work with the kids in your life. All they ask is that if you make copies, that you leave the copyright intact and if posted online that you point back to the Moms in Prayer webpage.

the power of prayer

The patches AHG rewards at the completion of the program are available in our Moms in Prayer store. We invite you to purchase and enjoy them with the girls in your life as well.

We are praying that God would bless you as you train the next generation of prayer warriors.

The Prayer Mat

This particular devotion and activity is near and dear to my heart. I hope it changes the way you hear me say “see you on the mat” when we train. Please know that when I say “see you on the mat” I am praying for you!

We’re learning self defense in studio! Sarah learns from Jody Token of The Great Flip. Positive Online Self Defense & Life Skills for Girls.

Posted by KFUO Radio on Friday, August 24, 2018

And I had a unique opportunity to share my faith and motivation behind The Great Flip.

My daughter created the name “The Great Flip.” She said learning Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) will turn a girl’s self defense game upside down! BJJ empowers girls with techniques so that a smaller, weaker person can overcome a larger opponent. TGF allows girls to feel empowered, confident and brave learning a new life skill like self-defense.

The Grace Place.

Martial arts is not typically associated with Christianity. There are a lot of eastern spirituality infused into the martial art culture. So it’s refreshing to learn a martial art and have a Christian world-view as its foundation.

I feel safer now

But here’s my soap box … There is so much pressure on girls today. And heading off to college and back-to-school can be extremely stressful. Anxiety is at an all-time high, especially girls. They feel pressure to get good grades, participate in extracurricular activities. And quite honestly, I think there’s even more unintended pressure on Christian kids; Read your Bible, go to Youth Group, go on a mission trip, etc. The list goes on and on. I feel like we, as parents and the church, have dangerously exchanged one form of “law” for another set of expectations falling again upon a “work” based life. And its crippling for our children.

In a small way, I want to restore the value of a Grace-based life. Knowing Grace is remembering God’s unconditional, unmerited love for everyone. You don’t have to earn it. You don’t have to work for it. You don’t have to ask for it. It’s a free gift. When Grace is restored to its proper place, we love because HE first loved us. When children (and parents and the church) remember that “We are saved by GRACE, through Faith…” we experience freedom to live life to the full. (See Ephesians 2:8)

i feel safer now

Flipped by Grace.

Therefore, The Great Flip is about The Gospel! Martin Luther, the great reformer, summarized the Christian faith using the Bible verse from the New Testament in 2 Corinthians 5:21:

“For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” 2 Corinthians 5:21

He called it The Great Exchange. I call it The Great Flip.

I want girls to not only learn an effective martial art, but I want girls to have a safe place to find encouragement and motivation. The gospel of Jesus Christ is all about grace; the free and unmerited favor of God.

Here at The Great Flip, girls will receive unconditional love and acceptance, no matter her past, present and future. I want girls to grow in grace with herself, with others and discover the unconditional message of God’s grace for every person, every where.

If you are not a Christian, I encourage you to meet me on the mat and continue your self-defense journey. Everyone is welcome. Consider the spiritual content something to meditate and reflect upon while you learn a new life skill. Check out my blog Why the Great Flip for more insight.

Grace is everywhere to be discovered … for you!

A big shout-out and thank you to KFUO Radio.

KFUO Radio is the longest continually operating Christian radio station in the United States. Owned and operated by The Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod (LCMS). I attend an LCMS church in St. Louis. I am extremely thankful for the opportunity they gave me to share The Great Flip.

It is my hope that young ladies every where, Christian Directors of Education, Youth Ministers and Pastors will be blessed by The Great Flip. You have an opportunity to share a life skill like self-defense (and team building activities) with a Christian worldview. Christ crucified … for you and me!

Marvelous Grace Chris Pratt

Marvel-ous Grace

What do Marvel movies, Jurassic Park movies and the TV show Parks and Recreation have in common with the biblical expression of Grace? Probably not much, except for a powerful speech given by the actor who plays the top role in all of them.  This summer, actor Chris Pratt won the MTV Generational Award. I’m not much of an MTV watcher, ok, I don’t watch it at all, but Pratt’s speech went viral and caught my attention. I think you’ll appreciate his courage to speak about his faith in front of a counter-culture audience. And you’ll get a beautiful glimpse at his understanding of God’s love expressed through grace.

Pratt presented his unique “Nine Rules by Chris Pratt.” He began with common-sense advice with number one; “Breathe, if you don’t, you’ll suffocate.” Then rule number two, “You have a soul. Be careful with it.” Then in perfect Chris Pratt style, rule number three, “Don’t be a turd.”

Now, if you are unfamiliar with Pratt, this line of communication may seem crude, but this is exactly the style that makes him a straight-shooter and down-right charming. If you know Pratt, you immediately appreciate his candor and comedic edge. By the way, his PG-13 Marvel movie “Guardians of the Galaxy” embodies this larger than life personality.

Then Pratt presented his faith in biblical proportion! Rule number six “God is real. God loves you. God wants the best for you. Believe that. I do,” Pratt proclaimed. He followed up with “Learn to pray. It’s easy and its good for your soul.”

But his final rule, rule nine, was by far, my favorite rule. He began with this statement, “Nobody’s perfect.” He continued, “People are gonna tell you, you’re perfect just the way that you are … you’re not! You’re imperfect. You always will be, but there is a powerful force that designed you that way, and if you are willing to accept that, you will have grace. And grace is a gift. Like the freedom that we enjoy in this country, that grace was paid for with somebody else’s blood. Do not forget it. Don’t take it for granted.”

To see the entire speech, here’s the link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EihqXHqxri0

Okay, this is me talking now, I truly believe if we teach, model and express biblical “grace” to our children, we will see healing unfold before our very eyes in the next generation. Give people the same free gift of grace that you once received (by faith). The Bible has an awesome verse that says, “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.” I bet Chris Pratt knows this one!
