Empowerment from Patti

If you need a little pick-me-up message, listen to my podcast conversation with my dear friend Patti Garibay. She is the American Heritage Girls Executive Director. She had just launched her new book “Why Curse the Darkness When You Can Light a Candle.” In her book, Patti shares her intimate story of overcoming darkness with God’s amazing grace and bright light. In our conversation, she and I celebrate 25 years of legacy in the American Heritage Girls ministry.

online self defense for girls

Create a martial arts experience at home.

online self defense for girlsStepping onto the big blue mats at the martial arts academy was overwhelming for me and my daughters. I’d like to share a few observations from that experience then show you how to create a martial arts experience at home. You’ll be happy you did plus you’ll save a ton of money and your girls will learn valuable life skills! Oh, and you’ll have clean mats, just saying.

Not enough time.

Learning a martial art was not on my radar as a mother of two daughters when they were little. There were too many other activities to conquer like soccer, piano, American Heritage Girls, and the list goes on and on. There wasn’t enough time, but I valued the idea. By creating a martial arts experience at home, I was able to add a valuable life skill to my daughters’ character development.

(BTW, if you are an American Heritage Girls leader, click here to learn about earning the Martial Arts Sports Pin and more Program Alliance info.)

Fear vs. fun.

Then suddenly, I had a tween and a teen. How did that happen so fast? The outside world was just around the corner. I think my fear of bad guys and bullies was greater than theirs. After all, they had not experienced anything truly terrifying (praise the Lord), but the threat is real. The dangers of human trafficking and rape are real. How can I prepare my daughters for such evil at age-appropriate levels?

Great question! My husband and I choose the martial art called Brazilian jiu-jitsu. For a quick history lesson and its benefits for girls and the self-defense application, I recommend you read my blog Why your daughter should learn Brazilian jiu-jitsu for self-defense.”

We signed up (Wowza, a one-year contract was required) and entered a whole new world. So many protocols to follow, bowing, hand slapping, knuckle bumping. What in the world was happening? Then, the physical nature of the jiu-jitsu. Wow, that took some time to get used to especially for me and my daughters. Suddenly men of all shapes and sizes were rolling around with us (and sweating on us …. EW).

I knew the experience was worth the momentary discomfort. We pushed through difficult moments knowing the outcome was greater. Now there’s a message to be made there, but I’ll push onward.

I continued the training and six years later, I’m a purple belt, certified instructor. My daughters couldn’t wait to finish the year and I had to drag them to class most of the time.

During that time, I learned valuable lessons about mainstream martial arts. There is a certain type of audience, mostly male-influenced coaching styles that do not motivate the mind of girls. The structure is tight, disciplined and rigid. The message is for the underdog or the bully, again, mostly for boys whose parents want them to be disciplined or toughened up.

The desired outcomes I had for my daughters did not match. I wanted values like courage, confidence and self-defense skills. When I turned to YouTube for online instruction, I found aggressive krav-maga style training suitable for adults, but not children.

Thus, I created The Great Flip, online self-defense videos, lesson plans and curriculum to introduce girls, ages six and older, to the martial art Brazilian jiu-jitsu. I walk you through the steps to recreate a martial arts experience at home using my program.

Follow these steps to create a martial arts experience at home:

A martial art tradition called “the bow.”

Why bow in the martial arts? Bowing is a common practice in the martial arts community. I participate in the bow when I  step on and off the mat. I also bow to the instructor and to my teammates at the beginning and the end of class.

To me, the bow is a symbol of respect, humility and gratitude. These three attributes are expressed not only toward the head instructor but also to my teammates.

When I step onto the mat, I bow to symbolize clearing my mind. I go into the lesson as a blank canvas ready to learn. Many jiu-jitsu academies post the expression “Leave your ego at the door”.  Students who stand on the mat with inflated egos go against everything the bow represents.

What does the bow mean to you?

“Do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 2:3-5

This is The Great Flip.

back to school

Jesus goes before me in all walks of life. He knows I have an inflated ego. He knows I am self-centered. My ego always gets in the way. And if you are introspective, you can admit that your ego, your self-centeredness, gets in the way too. If I bow in obedience, I bow in self-centeredness and ego. This is not a Christian issue, this is a humankind issue.

There is good news from the Christian world view. Read the Bible verse carefully. Go to your Bible and read the entire chapter in its context.

“Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus.”

I bow in my identity in Christ Jesus. The ability to be humble and gracious comes only from Christ Jesus. He will be humble for me. He will be gracious in me. Through his death on the cross, He takes my ego and buries it. He takes all my self-centeredness and nails it to the cross. Now every promise from God is mine “which is yours in Christ Jesus.” Now I can freely bow in my new identity with respect, humility and gratitude.

Improve your mother-daughter relationship with one powerful practice

Honestly, I did not plan on putting myself on the hot seat with a clinically-trained doctor in psychology. But in the midst of recording our podcast, I dove personally into my own mother-daughter relationship. The conversation we had was remarkable. She taught me how to improve my mother-daughter relationship with one powerful practice.

This is a must-listen podcast with Dr. Michelle Deering, a licensed clinical psychologist, board-certified sport psychologist, and mother-daughter relationship consultant who encourages, empowers, and equips women to connect intentionally so they can improve relationally. Her best-selling book is a fantastic read called “What Mothers Never Tell Their Daughters.” You can download the first chapter of her book at her website. See the notes below to connect with Dr. Deering.

But first, you must listen to the podcast to learn one powerful practice you can put into action immediately:

I met Dr. Michelle Deering in the midst of the quarantine for COVID-19 in the early summer of 2020. I was browsing social media looking for like-minded moms who desire to give mothers and daughters the best future. I’m here to testify that nothing can stop the power of friendship. That’s right, not even COVID.

Improving, restoring and reviving your mother-daughter relationship is key to every facet of your life, according to Dr. Deering. If you want to see success in all areas of your life, including your work life and family relationships, focusing on the mother-daughter relationship is key to improving everything else.

The main focus of her podcast called “The Mom Stops Here Show” is dedicated to moms and daughters to:

  • educate them about the impact of their mother-daughter relationship
  • equip them with strategic tools for communication, and
  • empower them to pause & consider their feelings, thoughts, and behaviors so that they can make intentional choices in their interactions with each other.

Here’s how to connect with Dr. Michelle Deering. Give her a big virtual hug from me and tell her I sent you to connect.

Hey, American Heritage Girls! Earn the Martial Arts Sports Pin here!

Hi, American Heritage Girls!

martial arts sports pin

I’m Coach Jody and I‘m here to help you earn the AHG Martial Arts Sports Pin using my online self-defense training videos at The Great Flip.

The Great Flip is inspired by the martial art called Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ). Among all the martial arts, BJJ is considered one of the best to learn because of its application to self-defense training, especially for girls and smaller-framed people.

You can earn the Martial Arts Sports Pin by studying and practicing the martial art Brazilian jiu-jitsu, also referred to as BJJ. There are a few requirements you will need to research on your own, but the majority of this sports pin can be achieved with a membership to The Great Flip.

What you will need to earn the Martial Arts Sports Pin using The Great Flip:

  1. The AHG Martial Arts Sports Pin in your AHG Handbook. I’m using the new 2020 requirements.
  2. The PDF document, “Earn the Martial Arts Sports Pin with The Great Flip.” (Included in every membership plan.)
  3. Membership Plan with The Great Flip. The Empowered Subscription Plan, Strong Purchase Plan, or any of the curriculum plans.
  4. Internet connection to stream the videos from Vimeo.com.
  5. Wear comfortable exercise clothes and create a designated training space with mats (interlocking mats, gymnastics mats or martial arts mats.) Here is my workout space at home: https://vimeo.com/289726478
  6. A training partner.

About Coach Jody, certified Brazilian jiu-jitsu instructor Gracie Barra

I, Coach Jody, trained and received my certification through the Gracie Barra BJJ worldwide community of schools. They exemplify a “jiu-jitsu for everyone” mindset.

I am currently a purple belt (you’ll learn more about the belt system later). Their training and certification process is rigorous and has a direct lineage to the Gracie family.

I created The Great Flip as a pathway and introduction to BJJ. If you decide to visit a BJJ gym, I recommend visiting a Gracie Barra Academy. My program at The Great Flip will prepare you for your BJJ journey.

“I will make a helper” and girl power

It is my desire to counter the culture with God’s truth and design for girl power. When God created Eve he said, ” I will make a helper…”

I believe being a helper is a position of strength, not weakness.  What do you think?

Want to listen instead? Click here to listen to my podcast!

But make sure you read to the bottom to participate in my summer challenge!

The word “helper” has gotten a bad wrap, especially among girls and women. If I’m honest, my first reaction to the title of “helper” is to become suspicious, puffed up and offended.

But the Bible tells a different story about the attributes and strength of the “helper.”

The first mention of the word “helper” is found in the Old Testament in the creation account in Genesis. “The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.” Then several more times, Eve is referred to as Adam’s helper.

Why do I assume the “helper” status is lower than the one being helped? Doesn’t the helper allow the one being helped to be greater?

God, himself is referred to as “helper.” Moses referred to God as his helper who saved him. “My father’s God was my helper; he saved me from the sword of Pharaoh.” Exodus 18:3-5

The Psalms ofter refer to God as a helper. God is the helper of the fatherless. Battles are won because God is our helper.

“The Lord is with me; he is my helper.  I look in triumph on my enemies.” Psalm 118:7

The New Testament writers remind us about the strong attribute of Jesus as our helper.

“God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” So we say with confidence, “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid.”

Jesus refers to the Holy Spirit as the “helper” to his disciples. This helper lives inside us. “These things I have spoken to you while I am still with you. But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.” John 14:25-27

I’m not a theologian, but I have an opinion about that moment back in Genesis. That moment in the Garden of Eden. That moment when Satan targeted Eve. He knew the power of the helper. He knew she was the first of the helpers. The one who would bring forth our ultimate helper.

But his plan did not work. Our helper came forth to conquer sin, death and the devil. Our help is in the Lord, Jesus Christ. Now we have been called to help others in that same might and strength.

If God can be a helper … so can you! Stand strong in your attribute as a helper!

Who do you consider to be “helpers” in your family, community? Do these people seem weak to you? Or do they build you up? Step into your God-given strength as a helper. What does a helper look like to you?

God calls us to love him and love our neighbor. He helps us, help others. This is a position of strength, not weakness.

This is the kind of girl power God is creating in you.

This is #thegreatflip

if it's not good news, it's not the gospel

If it’s not good news, it’s not the gospel.

It’s time for the great flip

I finally understand why people attend church twice a year; once for Christmas and once for Easter. There is a common message preached on those two church holidays. The theme is what makes church palatable twice a year. I believe If the church proclaimed this theme every Sunday, churches might be a little fuller. If this message was the foundation of every Christian lifestyle, more people might be attracted to the Christian faith.

The message is simple:  Jesus loves you. He loves you no matter what. No amount of darkness, shame or brokenness can stop Jesus from loving you. And you don’t have to love him back. He still loves you. And more than 2,000 years ago, He rescued you, restored you and gave you new life now and into eternity. This good news is worth repeating more than twice a year. And this good news is a free gift for you.

The narrative of the Bible is the same good news over and over again. In short, God created the world and gave it to his people as a gift. And it was good. But his people turned away from God. But God, because of his loving kindness, rescued his people. He restored his people and gave them a way of life that brings balance and blessing. He protected his people. But again, his people turn away from Him. Shockingly living life apart from God led to darkness, shame and brokenness. But God, because of his loving kindness, rescued his people again. This happened over and over in the Bible narrative.

if it's not good news, it's not the gospel

Then something amazing happened, God sent his son, Jesus (Merry Christmas) to put an end to our cycle of rebellion. Jesus ushered into the world a divine rescue, redemption and restoration plan. He demonstrated a perfectly balanced and blessed life. He demonstrated a life full of love and mercy. And this divine plan was a gift to us.

Then, (here comes Holy Week and Good Friday) Jesus took our darkness, shame and brokenness. He took all our sin. He didn’t ask permission. Like a holy thief, Jesus stole our sin to bury it once and for all.

After he took our sin, he became our sin. His body became the sin of the world. His blood was poured out for the forgiveness of all our sin. This happened when he was crucified on a cross. Then, along with his body and blood, our sins were buried in the tomb. The entire narrative of the Bible leads to this epic moment on the cross.  We are no longer separated from God because of our sin.

Then, (Happy Easter) Jesus rose from the dead. He arose out of the tomb and left the sin of the world buried once and for all. He arose with a new life. Now he gives us that same new life. Jesus conquered death, darkness, shame and brokenness. We have fullness of life through Christ’s atoning work on the cross.

Yet, the story is not quite over. Jesus promises to come back to complete the rescue mission. Make no mistake, he has conquered death. We live in a new kingdom always moving closer to full restoration. He gave us his spirit so we can continue to receive his gifts and live a balanced and blessed life. Even in the midst of death, darkness, shame and brokenness, we can proclaim his good news and share the good gifts with everyone around us.

It’s an epic story. It’s a true story. I love hearing it over and over again. I love it because it doesn’t require any thing from me. I get to sit back and be lavished with God’s love. The good news reminds me I’m rescued, redeemed and restored with new life now and into eternity in heaven with him.

The word “gospel” means good news. It’s good news for so many reasons, but for me, it’s good news because the love of the Father through his Son, Jesus Christ and the power of his Holy Spirit is all a free gift for me. I didn’t deserve it. Now, I want to share this gift with everyone I know!

If it’s not good news, it’s not the gospel.

But something happens on the other 51 Sundays. Side note, the year 2020 had 53 Sundays. So give or take a Sunday or two, something goes terribly wrong.

The narrative of God’s epic rescue shifts to man’s epic effort to earn God’s love. Suddenly a “pay-to-stay” salvation plan is handed to us. Now, we strive and serve God to please him. The gifts meant to bring blessing become a burden. And this is when a lot of people stop attending church. People are smart. They hear the contradiction. See you next year.

Ironically, this is not a new story. Jesus spent a majority of his ministry restoring the good news. The religious leaders of the day turned the ten commandments into hundreds of commandments. Originally, the commandments were given as gifts to create balance and blessing, but church leaders turned them into unachievable laws. Habits like prayer, fasting, tithing and Sabbath were gifts as means to worship God with all our senses. Now they’ve become rituals. Even repentance is a gift. God, in his mercy, turns us away from unhealthy things (He does the work). Repentance is a time given by God to reflect and remember his loving kindness (remember Holy Week and Good Friday). But we have turned it into an act of labor done to earn forgiveness. Remember that holy thief called Jesus? He took your sin. He was crucified for it and gave you new life. We don’t earn forgiveness, we receive it as a free gift.

Reformations have occurred in church history to restore the good news.  Martin Luther attempted to restore the central theme of good news. He referred to the gospel as the Divine Exchange. Jesus became all my sin, and I become all of Jesus’ righteousness. And this work is Christ’s alone. And this is a gift so no one can boast or earn it.

Maybe it’s time for another reformation. Like Martin Luthers’ Divine Exchange, I like to call it The Great Flip. Jesus is the gift giver and I’m the gift receiver.  It’s time to get ourselves out of the equation and restore Jesus as the sole gift-giver.

The equation is not: Jesus + something = Everything.

The equation is: Jesus + nothing = Everything.

The gospel cost Jesus everything. It didn’t cost you anything.

A popular illustration that needs a good comeback is the “Do vs. Done” principle. If you think you must “do” something to earn God’s love, then it’s not gospel. The gospel is this: “Jesus has “done” everything for you.

When “Christian living” becomes something you do to earn God’s love, it is no longer a gift. This is why we give presents at Christmas and Easter as symbols of God’s extravagant love for us.  Christian living will proceed from our freedom in Christ.

And the gifts just keep coming! If you think you must muster up enough faith to believe everything I just said … good news! “Faith comes by hearing and by hearing the word of Christ.” Even faith is a gift. So when you read the Bible, read it as one receiving gifts rather than a list of rules. Read it to receive his loving kindness, to receive his forgiveness and receive his way of life that brings balance and blessing. And read it to share the good news with others.

Happy Easter (and Christmas too, if I don’t hear from you until next year)! May the good news of Jesus Christ “gift” you all year long. He loves you.

“For God so loved the world, that he gave … “ John 3:16

-Coach Jody

family style theology

Fitness, faith and family-style theology at The Great Flip

Can fitness, faith and family-style theology go together? According to Cindy Koch, a home-school mother of four, Master of Arts in exegetical theology, cross-fit instructor and jiu-jitsu practioner, these attributes are a natural part of her family life.

In this podcast at The Great Flip, Coach Jody and Cindy share fun activities you and your family can do now during the COVID19 home quarantine. These activities include a fitness scavenger hunt and online self-defense/jiu-jitsu training. Listen here:

Faith

Talking to your children about faith can be challenging. They can ask the craziest things and you may not have all the answers. And that’s okay. Cindy has great advice about seeking answers to tough questions.

  • She says it’s okay to not know all the answers. Praise your child’s curiosity and determine to research and discover God’s truth together.
  • Surround yourself with wise mentors, pastors and resources to help guide your journey. Facilitating a home that is safe for discussion and even disagreements is better than shutting a child down.

family style theology

Family-Style Theology. Cindy and her husband encourage lively discussions with their children. Nothing is off limits. Her podcast, Family-Style Theology is a glimpse of the interaction with her children, who are featured in the podcast. The podcast explores theological topics through family conversation. Her podcast is one of many resources at 1517.org which includes a podcast network, daily articles, speakers, a publishing house, annual conferences, and an online academy. Most of which are free resources ground in Biblical truth.

Easter

And just in time for Holy Week and Easter, tune into Family-Style Theology to learn more about the passion of Christ and the grand story of God’s great love for you.

Fitness

A fitness scavenger hunt

  • Gather up the kiddos into one designated place, such as the family room, etc.
  • Call out a specific exercise everyone must do. (Five Burpees, jumping jacks, etc.)
  • Next call out instructions to go find something in the house and return to the designated area as fast as possible. (Bring a hair brush and a book, etc.)
  • The first one back wins! Make up rules best for your family. Have fun and get some exercise!
  • Add chores to the mix to get jobs done (Go make your bed. Go brush your teeth, etc.) 😍

Online self-defense. Cindy has watched her children blossom by learning jiu-jitsu and self-defense skills. Their confidence increased and their relationship with each other improved. And jiu-jitsu is a martial art well-suited for children. The techniques are simple and facilitates success.

More about Faith

If you are seeking to explore the Christian worldview for the first time or are a total Bible nerd, you will find amazing resources at 1517.org. I’m somewhere in-between first-timer and nerd. But their mission is what caught my attention:

To declare and defend the Good News that we are forgiven and free on account of Christ alone.

The inspiration for The Great Flip is a reflection of this “Christ alone” concept.

2 Corinthians 5:21 says, “For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”

Christ alone, became all you sin and shame. He gave you all his goodness and you stand right before God, who loves you. And Christ alone did this work … for you. ❤️

The Great Flip offers a great opportunity for girl-led activities in your AHG Troop. Whether a girl or a parent leads the instructional videos, she MUST preview and practice the techniques before teaching anyone else.

“The girls really enjoyed the program. My daughter used it as her Community Outreach project to receive the Harriet Tubman award. She practiced with the videos every day for a over month, then led the girls along with the videos and helped them learn and practice the techniques. Thanks so much for such an awesome program. Everyone enjoyed it!” – Jennifer O’Brien, AHG Troop Leader

Special Event

The 12-video series can be completed during a 1.5-hour workshop format. Each video is approximately three minutes. Girls can practice the techniques for 5-10 minutes, then move on to the next technique.

Father/Daughter Event & Mother/Daughter Event

The Great Flip offers an empowering and interactive event for girls to do with mom or dad!

Unit Meeting

Tenderhearts through Patriots can learn self-defense skills during a Unit meeting. You can complete one technique per meeting or work on several techniques.

Pre and Post Meeting Fitness Stations
